Nell Akin

November 26, 1926 — May 20, 2024

Nell Brown Akin, age 97, passed away on Monday May 20th in Red Hill, GA.

Nell was born November 26, 1926, in Carnesville, GA and was the daughter of Lawrence Brown & Willie Mae Dilworth and much beloved stepmother Viola Smith Brown. Nell married Merrell Akin of Carnesville, GA on October 19, 1946. She was a nurse and worked with Dr. Robert Sullivan for 30 years. She loved the medical field and helping others. She was kind and comforting to all but had a special place in her heart for the elderly. She was an avid animal lover, and her little dog Sammi was always by her side. Nell also loved sports and played on a travel basketball team who once played against the Atlanta Tomboys, a semi pro team. Nell and Merrell had one date the day before he left for the Army. They corresponded for the next two years and married when he was honorably discharged from the service. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was a Christian example to all her family. She loved people and took joy in quietly helping someone in need. Nell was a strong Christian lady who worked hard all her life and often said "this world has outgrown me". She was also the longest living member of Allens United Methodist Church. Nell belonged to The Greatest Generation that we are sadly losing.

She was preceded in death by her parents Lawrence, Willie Mae & Viola Smith Brown. Siblings Katherine Brown and Bobby Brown. Husband Merrell Akin, Son Kenneth and his infant twin brother Keith.

Nell is survived by her daughter Jan & Wayne Caudell, Daughter in-law Sherlene E. Akin, Grandchildren Amie C. & Steve Ray, Chad Akin, Cale & Tammy Caudell, Kellie A. & Jeremy Spagnoli. Great-Grandchildren Abby & Presley Ray, Will Akin and Lyric Caudell. Sisters in-law Pearl Brown and Deborah Akin. Loving niece Pat Ryals and nephew Robert Brown and niece Rita Brown.
