Morris Dewey Purcell, 86, of Tampa, Florida, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
Born and raised in Carnesville, Georgia, Morris was the youngest of five siblings and spent his early years working on the family farm. After graduating from college, he began a distinguished 35-year career with the United States Postal Inspection Service. His service took him to numerous assignments across the country, and he ultimately retired in 1993 as Inspector in Charge of the Tampa Division. Throughout his career, Morris was widely respected for his professionalism, steady leadership, and unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of law enforcement.
Morris's life was also deeply rooted in his Christian faith and he was devoted to serving the church. In retirement, Morris enjoyed traveling, golfing, woodworking, and, above all, being with his family and friends. He will be remembered as a man of quiet strength, steady devotion, and integrity.
Morris was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Sara Purcell; his grandson, Daniel Purcell; his parents, Willie and Dorothy Purcell; his brothers, Herman and Leon Purcell; and his sister, Helen Harrison. He is survived by his sister, Betty Goolsby (Jack); his sons, Chip (Pamela) and Matt; his grandchildren, Jacquelin Wester (Mitchell), Matthew Purcell (Katie), Jacob Purcell (Reyna), and Zachary Purcell; and his great-grandchildren, Jackson, Micah, and Lela Wester, and Athena and Kellin Purcell.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Burgess Cemetery in Lavonia, Georgia. A celebration of life will follow in Florida at Creekside Church, 311 Newberger Road, Lutz, Florida, on a date to be announced.
