Edwin Nathan Varner, loving father and grandfather, age 91, of Rydal, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Manor Lake Assited Living.
Edwin was born in Carnesville, GA, on December 3, 1933, to the late Eugene Muncy Varner and Edna Susan Ford Varner. He was greeted in heaven by his loving wife, Margie Lee Varner (Cox); son, Retired Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Lee Varner; brothers, Alton Varner (Elvie), James Varner (Eva), and Wendell Varner; and sisters, Catherine Phillips (Edward) and Annette Varner.
Edwin was a dedicated educator who retired after 34 years of teaching, having worked in both Gordon and Bartow County school systems. He taught students from kindergarten through 12th grade, impacting many lives with his commitment to education. Edwin held a bachelor's degree in education from Reinhardt College and a master's degree in education from the University of Georgia.
He was an active member of the Bartow Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Rydal, GA, the Pickens Star Lodge #220, and the Woodman of the World. Edwin also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and the Woodman camps, reflecting his passion for helping others and giving back to the community. In his leisure time, he enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Louie and Miki Varner; daughter-in-law, Beth Varner; grandchildren, Ansley Varner, Landon Varner, Bailey Hembree, Jonathan Varner (Ashley), James Varner (Braci), Judith Varner, and Jeffrey Varner; great-grandchildren, Joshua Varner, Harper Varner, Lyra Wright, Luna Wright, Nova Wright, and Leo Wright; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 28, 2025, at 11:00 AM Bartow Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bart Black officiating. Graveside service will follow at 3:00 PM at Bold Spring Methodist Church Cemetery, Carnesville.
Pallbearers include Tyler and Bentley Bagwell, Shane Brown, Chris Lyerla, Jimmy Day, Billy Henson, Payson Hammonds, Phillip, Blake, and Brennon Haley, Vince Tillerson, Mark Phillips, and Brad Seagraves. Honorary pallbearers will be active elders of Bartow Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Barton Funeral Home, Adairsville.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to his loving caregivers, Dee Crowe, Theresa Smith and Loretta Bryant, the staff at Manor Lake Memory Care, and Affinis Hospice.
